TRICARE Overseas Proof of Payment: What Counts
The documents TRICARE accepts as proof that you paid a foreign provider, what does not count, and when you need the Proof of Payment Attestation Form.
By the PaidTrail team · Updated · Checked against official sources
Proof of payment is the document that shows you actually paid the provider. Without it, TRICARE cannot reimburse you, and the claim can be returned. It is separate from the itemized bill: the bill shows what you were charged, and the proof shows what you paid.
What TRICARE accepts
According to TRICARE’s page on proof of payment for overseas claims, you can send any of these along with the provider’s invoice or itemized bill:
- A copy of a check showing the provider’s name in the “pay to the order of” field, signed by the patient or sponsor.
- A credit card receipt.
- An electronic funds transfer receipt.
- A bank statement documenting the payment to the provider (it should show the provider’s name), or a cash withdrawal equal to or greater than the paid amount.
- A receipt, itemized bill or statement from the provider’s office stamped PAID.
- For outpatient prescriptions: an invoice for the medication dispensed, with a list of the prescribed drugs.
The DD Form 2642 itself gives a shorter list: a canceled check, a credit card receipt, or an electronic funds transfer (EFT) record showing the beneficiary paid the provider. The longer list above comes from TRICARE’s proof of payment page for overseas claims, so use it, and when in doubt send a card or bank record along with the bill.
A practical tip: match the provider’s name
A card receipt or bank line should be traceable to the provider you are claiming for. If your statement shows only a payment terminal’s name, add the provider’s bill showing the same date and amount so the two can be matched. If you paid in cash, a cash withdrawal at least as large as the amount you paid is on the accepted list, so keep that statement.
What is not on the list
TRICARE’s lists describe what is accepted, and a few common items are not on them:
- A bill with no payment shown. A balance due statement shows what you owe, not what you paid.
- An unmarked invoice. If the provider’s office states it was paid, it needs to be stamped PAID.
- A promise of payment or a quote.
If you are unsure, send more rather than less: the bill, plus a card receipt or bank statement.
The Proof of Payment Attestation Form
TRICARE’s overseas instructions say a Proof of Payment Attestation Form is required when a beneficiary has paid a provider $10,000 USD or more. If that applies to you, download the form from the TRICARE Overseas site and submit it with everything else.
Several services on one form
If you put more than one claim on one claim form, you must include proof of payment for each service. TRICARE reviews each one separately and returns the ones without proof. Filing visits one at a time, each with its own bill and receipt, keeps this simple.
How PaidTrail handles it
When you upload a bill, PaidTrail checks whether it shows a payment, spots a card slip inside the same file, and reminds you when a bill still has no proof of payment. It matches a proof to its bill by provider, date and amount, and it flags a payment of $10,000 or more so you remember the attestation form. It only suggests: you always confirm.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as proof of payment for a TRICARE overseas claim?
TRICARE lists a signed check copy, a credit card receipt, an electronic funds transfer receipt, a bank statement showing the payment to the provider (or a cash withdrawal equal to or greater than the amount paid), and a receipt, bill or statement stamped PAID by the provider's office.
Is a bill that just says PAID in print enough?
TRICARE's list specifies a receipt, itemized bill or statement from the provider's office that is stamped PAID. Ask your provider to stamp it, or send a card or bank record instead.
When do I need the Proof of Payment Attestation Form?
TRICARE's overseas instructions say it is required when a beneficiary has paid a provider $10,000 USD or more.
Do I need proof of payment for every service on a claim?
Yes. If you combine more than one claim on a single claim form, TRICARE says you must submit proof of payment for each service.
