How Long Do TRICARE Overseas Claims Take? What to Do

What TRICARE says about overseas claim processing time, how long mailed reimbursements can take, how to track a claim and when to follow up.

You filed the claim. What now? Here is what TRICARE says about timing, and what you can do while you wait.

What TRICARE says

  • Processing: TRICARE’s claims page says its claims processors process most claims within 30 days. Its guidance for overseas claims says to allow up to 30 days after the claims processor receives your claim. In some cases the processor may ask you for additional information, which takes longer.
  • Payment: after the claim is processed, it may take up to 28 days to receive reimbursement in the mail.
  • Mail: if you send the claim by postal mail, TRICARE notes that overseas-to-U.S. mail delivery can take up to 28 days. That time comes before processing starts.
  • Faster ways: TRICARE calls the secure claims portal the fastest and most secure way to submit, and says registered users should sign up for direct deposit in the portal to speed up payment. Direct deposit is available to anyone with a U.S. bank account.

These numbers come from TRICARE’s own pages and can change, so treat them as a guide, not a promise.

After you submit

  1. Save the confirmation, or note the date and method you used.
  2. Record the claim number as soon as one appears in the portal or on an EOB.
  3. Keep complete copies of everything you sent.

Tracking

The TRICARE Overseas Secure Claims Portal lets you track your claims, look up your deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses, and view your explanation of benefits. Check it from time to time rather than every day.

When it seems slow

Add up the time above: mailing, then up to 30 days of processing, then reimbursement. If that has passed, contact your TRICARE Overseas regional call center, or use secure messaging in the portal. Have ready the patient’s name, the provider, the date of care, the date you filed and the claim number. Choosing your own reminder date, such as 45 days after filing, is a good habit. It is your own nudge, not an official deadline.

When the EOB arrives

Read it line by line: how to read an EOB. Remember the 90-day window to appeal. If it shows a denial, see what to do if a claim is rejected.

How PaidTrail helps

Mark a claim as submitted and PaidTrail shows how long it has been waiting, then flags it when it passes the wait set for that program, with a reminder email you can turn off.
